Inspired by Marie Curie
Hi, my name is Tamara. I'm a data scientist at Reblaze. I love what I do, and I'm proud to be part of a team that rocks!
We recently released a new open-source project, Curiefense*. It is named after Marie Curie (born Maria Skłodowska).
Her life story has been an inspiration for generations, and for me too. Her example has helped me grow, and it taught me never to give up.
Even as a schoolgirl, Maria was an extraordinarily hard worker. She was devoted to her studies, sometimes skipping sleep and meals. After school she worked as a governess to save money, so she could move to Paris and study physics and chemistry at the Sorbonne.
In Paris she lived in a cold attic in the Latin Quarter, in spartan conditions, and worked extremely hard. It paid off: she became one of the best students at the university and earned two degrees, in physics and mathematics. Her work got noticed, and she was given the chance to do her own research. She later became the first woman professor in the history of the Sorbonne.
When Marie and her husband Pierre discovered radium, many scientists were skeptical. They kept working until they proved it. They also shared what they learned, which helped advance medicine and industrial radiography.
Marie Curie was the first person to win Nobel Prizes in two different sciences. She helped found radiological institutes, including some of the most important radium institutes in Europe, and she was a member of 85 scientific societies. She proved that gender has nothing to do with being a great scientist.
Sharing knowledge is also the idea behind Curiefense. We're building it in the open and building a community around it.
